Personal Information
Israel Horovitz is author of more than 50 produced plays. Among Horovitz’s best-known plays are Line, The Indian Wants The Bronx, Rats, It’s Called The Sugar Plum, Morning, The Primary English Class, The Wakefield Plays, The Good Parts, Mackerel, and his “Growing Up Jewish” trilogy. This season in NYC: Free Gift, Barking Sharks and Captains and Courage. Other well-known work includes Park Your Car In Harvard Yard, North Shore Fish, Henry Lumper, Sunday Runners In The Rain, Strong-Man’s Weak Child, The Widow’s Blind Date, Year Of The Duck, Fighting Over Beverley, Unexpected Tenderness, Barking Sharks, and Captains and Courage. Recent Horovitz plays include My Old Lady, Lebensraum, One Under; Stations of the Cross, Fast Hands, promises.com and 50 Years of Caddying. Screen adaptations of his stage-plays include: Strong- Man’s Weak Child, North Shore Fish, The Widow’s Blind Date, Fighting Over Beverley, Sunshine and the recently- acclaimed TNT film James Dean. He has written and performed 3 Weeks After Paradise, a monologue concerned with the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center. Horovitz has won numerous writing awards, including the OBIE (twice), the EMMY, the Prix de Plaisir du Théâtre, The Prix du Jury of the Cannes Film Festival, The Prix Italia, The Christopher Award, The Drama Desk Award, an Award in Literature of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, The Elliot Norton Prize, a Lifetime Achievement Award from B’Nai Brith, an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Salem (Massachusetts) State College, Boston Public Library's Literary Lights Award, The Walker Hancock Prize, and many others.
