William Inge

Personal Information
William Inge was born in Independence, KS and was to wait 32 years before he wrote his first play and two more years before he saw the first production of his work. Farther Off From Heaven was produced in Dallas. The production attracted little attention but Inge had found his destiny and he began the two years of work that would produce Come Back, Little Sheba. The play was a success and was followed by Picnic, which won the Pulitzer Prize. Bus Stop opened at the Music Box Theatre on March 2, 1955. Time Magazine called the play, "the season's and possibly the author's best play. The Dark at the Top of the Stairs opened in 1957. His screenplay, Splendor in the Grass, won an Academy Award in 1961.
