Scott Lehrer is a sound designer and
engineer/producer whose work can be
heard in a variety of media. As a
theatrical designer, he has done sound
for the first eight seasons of Encores-
Great American Musicals in Concert at
New York’s City Center including the
current Broadway revival of
Chicago, for the Harry
Connick/Susan Stroman musical Thou
Shalt Not, for Tom Stoppard’s play
The Invention of Love at the
Lyceum Theatre, for the national tour
of Tallulah starring Kathleen
Turner, for the Broadway musical
James Joyce’s The Dead, for
Lincoln Center Theater’s 1998
production of Ah, Wilderness,
for the Pulitzer Prize winning plays
Angels in America and The
Heidi Chronicles, for the Broadway
musicals Once on this Island, My
Favorite Year, and The Most
Happy Fella, as well as for Wendy
Wasserstein’s play An American
Daughter. His musical work also
includes the original productions of
Stephen Sondheim’s Saturday Night,
Assassins, Sunday in the Park with
George, and Putting It
Together starring Julie Andrews.
Other Broadway work includes A
Streetcar Named Desire with Alec
Baldwin and Jessica Lange, Craig
Lucas’s Prelude to a Kiss and
Paul Rudnick’s I Hate Hamlet. He
is also the designer for Alec Baldwin’s
Voices play reading series at
City
Center. He has designed sound for
dozens of productions at New York’s non-
profit theatres. At Playwrights
Horizons his work includes Isn’t It
Romantic, Geniuses, and Terra
Nova, all directed by Gerald
Gutierrez, at Lincoln Center Theater:
The Substance of Fire, Hapgood,
and A Fair Country, at Manhattan
Theatre Club: Terrence McNally’s A
Perfect Ganesh, Arthur Miller’s
The Last Yankee and many others. He
has worked several times with the
director/designer Robert Wilson,
including on his production of
Hamletmachine in New York and on
European tour and on a future gallery
project for the Guggenheim
Museum.
As a designer of soundtracks
and installations for museums, film and
corporate media, he worked on many
projects with pioneer media producer
Rusty Russell, including the Statue
of Liberty Museum, Colonial
Williamsburg, The Grand Rapids Public
Museum, The Creative Discovery
Museum in Chattanooga, and The
Ellis Island Museum. His work with
Rusty’s successors at RBH Multimedia
includes the Bruce Museum, The Luce
Center, several New York State
Urban Cultural Parks, and many
others. He has recently designed
soundtracks for the PRG Group,
including an audio animatronic dragon
for the West Edmundton Mall in Canada
and a surround sound wilderness diorama
for the Potawatome Casino in Milwaukee.
His media work also includes track
production and system design for many
major corporations, from AT&T to Merck
Labs to Century 21 Real Estate, Audi,
Merrill Lynch and Xerox. He has mixed
over 50 films for the Philadelphia
based Medical Broadcasting Company, one
of the country’s largest media
producers for the healthcare industry.
Over the last few years he produced
sound tracks for several of Las Vegas
based Encore Productions shows for IBM,
including Euro-Telecom(in six
languages), the introduction to China
of OS2(in English and Chinese), their
technology exhibits at the 1996
Atlanta Olympics. He also designed
the soundtrack for the independent
feature thriller Fallout and for
many documentaries, including HBO’s
Out At Work, and PBS’s
Another Brother, both directed
by Tammy Gold and Collectors by
Julian Hobbes.
