History
Founded by Theodore Mann and Jose Quintero in 1951 at the site of an abandoned nightclub on Sheridan Square, the Circle in the Square has been credited as launching the Off Broadway movement. Landmark productions include Tennessee Williams's Summer and Smoke (starring Geraldine Page)and Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh (starring Jason Robards Jr.) The theater moved to Bleecker Street in 1959 and became known as the Circle in the Square Downtown.
