David Rabe's first plays in New York were a quartet of plays dealing with the Vietnam War: The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel, Sticks and Bones, Streamers and The Orphan, all produced by Joseph Papp at The Public Theatre. Other plays include In the Boom Boom Room, Goose and Tomtom, Hurlyburly, Those The River Keeps, A Question of Mercy, The Dog Problem, Cosmologies and The Black Monk, adapted from a Chekhov story. His screenplays include I'm Dancing as Fast as I Can and Casualties of War. In 1993, he published his first novel, Recital of the Dog. In the fall, Grove Atlantic is publishing his book of stories titled A Primitive Heart. He is the recipient of a Tony Award, three Hull-Warriner Awards, and two Drama Desk Awards.
