John Ford

Personal Information

John Ford was one of last of the major English Renaissance dramatists. Most of his plays date from the 1620s to 1630s, decades that witnessed the final flourish of English drama before the Puritans closed down the theatres in 1642. About 20 years younger than Shakespeare, Ford is generally recognized as one of the greatest playwrights from that period. He began his dramatic career co-authoring at least six plays with some of the era’s most-influential playwrights, including Thomas Middleton, William Rowley, John Webster, and Thomas Dekker. Ford is the sole author of 11 plays, including The Lover's Melancholy, The Broken Heart, Perkin Warbeck, and ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore. Red Bull Theater's 2015 production of John Ford's Tis Pity She's a Whore was the first major Off-Broadway revival of the play in over 20 years.
