Garry Hynes

Personal Information
Garry Hynes is the first woman in history to have won a Tony Award for Best Director of a Play for her 1998 production of The Beauty Queen of Leenane. In 1975, Ms. Hynes co-founded the Druid Theatre Company – the first professional company established in Ireland outside Dublin. She served as Artistic Director of Druid Theatre between 1975 and 1990 and again since 1994. She has been Artistic Director of The Abbey Theatre since 1990, where her directing credits include The Plough and The Stars, A Whistle in The Dark, and The Shaughraun. Ms. Hynes has also directed for the Royal Shakespeare Company at Stratford-on- Avon and London, The Royal Exchange in Manchester, and The Royal Court Theatre in London. She has received two L.L.D. (Yonoris Causa) for service to the Irish Theatre. Ms. Hynes’ critically acclaimed production of John B. Keane’s Big Maggie is currently running at The Abbey Theatre in Dublin
